Wild Hogs, Stone Crab Claws:

Florida HOG, (Harley Owners Group)

Large flag parade through the nation's oldest city, St. Augustine, Florida, yesterday, pretty impressive. Party point was at the foot of the St. Augustine beach pier, just down the road from the old lighthouse. For 7 bucks and change, they'd deep fry you some shrimp and a huge pile of fries, the highlight. Low point was $4 for a brown bottle of beer. 2009 has definitely not been a "Four Dollar Beer Year" In all, a nice, mellow change to the Daytona Biketoberfest of last week. Fl HOG usually has it's rally in Cocoa Beach, to the south. Most riders we spoke with were happy to be in St. Augustine for a nice change, some from faraway places across the big blue sea.

"The Claw"

Stone Crab Claw, that is.. October 15th marks the start of Florida Stone Crab season. They set traps, pull 'em up, pluck the little beggars out, and liberate them of one or both claws, depending on if the claw is big enough to be harvested. Back in the ocean go the crabs, free to regrow their claws once more, and hopefully, smart enough to stay out of the trap next time around. It's a regenerative fishery.

ABM Lucks Out:

After a long hard day of interviewing wild HOGs, (its a rough job but someone has to do it!), ABM dropped into a local adult-beverage vending establishment in order to wash down the dust, got friendly with a very nice lady tending bar, who let it slip that she knew where to get bags of these delicious morsels for not $16.99/lb, but rather, $6/lb! There had to be a catch, but there wasn't. Contacted by phone, a clandestine meeting with two tall, lanky ladies was set. $120 cash, all your intrepid reporter had on him at the time, was handed over for 20 lbs of fresh not frozen claws, a few the size of your hand. Triple wrapped in 20 gallon plastic bags with ice, and placed into tour bags, we rode north as quickly as possible, trying to balance the chance of being invited to roadside by the man, vs. screwing around too long, and having salt water dripping down the back fenders. Later at the compound, we dredged 30 of those baby's in land o' lakes garlic butter & chased them down with a fresh hot loaf of home made bread. Livin' large, at 60% off retail. Life is good.
